Rebecca MacKinnon notes that the issue isn’t black and white. She’s right, because what Eason Jordan claims has happened actually could happen. It’s farfetched, but it’s possible, and we should always be watching our military carefully and criticizing when necessary and appropriate.

Again, if the military of the United States was actually intentionally targeting journalists for execution, it would shake this nation from top to bottom and a lot of things would change almost overnight. I can only imagine the consequences, but they would be heavy and long lasting. Think American Civil War II. We’re already a polarized nation. If our military was pursuing dishonorable policies that involved assassinating those who speak out against us – my God, I can’t even fathom it.

There is a huge moral difference between killing those who are actively trying to kill you and killing those who express disagreement with your lifestyle, national policies, religion or military activities. Killing journalists who print negative things about you is clearly wrong.

Jason Eason is likely misguided. He better be, or there will be hell to pay.
